The 1985 Lombard RAC Rally marked a pivotal moment in both Markku Alén's illustrious career and the evolution of rally technology, as it served as the World Rally Championship debut for Lancia's revolutionary Delta S4. Starting and finishing in Nottingham, this gruelling 65-stage marathon covered 550 competitive miles through some of Britain's most demanding terrain, taking competitors on a punishing four-day journey through the Midlands into Wales, up through Yorkshire, and into the unforgiving Scottish Borders.
The event unfolded in bitterly cold conditions with ice-covered stages that tested both man and machine to their absolute limits, providing the perfect proving ground for Lancia's new technological marvel and the driving skills of one of Finland's greatest rally exports.

Alén's performance throughout the event was nothing short of masterful, demonstrating both his legendary "maximum attack" driving style and the remarkable capabilities of the Delta S4. Paired with the experienced Ilkka Kivimäki, who had been his trusted navigator since the mid-1970s, Alén pushed chassis 207 to its limits across the 63 special stages and 880 kilometres of competitive distance. The Finnish duo's charge was so impressive that they finished less than 60 seconds behind the eventual winners, Henri Toivonen and Neil Wilson in the sister #6 car, after what amounted to nearly 15 hours of competitive driving.
This remarkable margin of defeat, achieved on the car's very first outing in World Rally Championship competition, spoke volumes about both Alén's exceptional skill and the immediate competitiveness of Lancia's new weapon. Together, the two Delta S4s dominated the event, claiming an astounding 41 victories from the rally's 63 special stages, announcing to the rallying world that a new era had begun.
